“A Warm Welcome to the Post graduate and Research Centre- Department of Home Science of Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.
The Department was founded in the year 1958 by our founder Head of the Department Prof Anna George and was led forward by our dear teachers- Prof. Lekshmikutty Amma, Prof. Pushpa V, Prof. Chandravally Thampuran, Prof. K.C. Salomy, Prof. Raheena Begum, Dr S Kamini, Dr V Girija Devi, Prof. PK Girija Devi, Dr R Radhika, Dr. Susan J Mathew and Dr Elizabeth Varghese.
We offer an undergraduate degree course -BSc Home Science and two 2 Post Graduate courses in Home Science – MSc Home Science (Extension Education) and MSc Home Science (Food & Nutrition). The PhD program in Home Science was initiated in 2019. All the courses offered by this Department are full-time courses and are recognized by Kerala University. There are 8 permanent faculty appointed in the Department.
The curriculum of all the programs is designed in such a manner that the students have a good exposure to theoretical knowledge and alongside acquire practical experience during their study period. It is updated every three years to meet the changing demands of the times. The curriculum is in line with those of other National and International Universities and has been successful in helping students clear National level competitive exams like NET, SET, CSIR, ICAR.
The Department endeavors to stimulate a holistic development of the student by instilling a scientific mind, a healthy competitive spirit, and a compassionate outlook through its various academic and extracurricular activities.
The Department has ample Laboratory facilities to equip students in the practical aspects of their studies. The Memorandums of Understanding that the Department has with various National organizations (NGOs, Hospitals, and Academic Institutions) provide an opportunity for students to get a practical exposure during their time here.
The Department has seen its alumni shining in various field of Education, Community work, Health services, Hotel and Hospitality Industry, Food industry, Administration, Planning and policy making agencies and various NGOs.
