Research Centre: Gender Studies

Gender Studies Centre  is an independent, interdisciplinary academic- research centre aiming at promoting in-depth gender research, training, scientific analysis and public policy interventions with the objective of delivering actionable ideas that could transform society. The centre aims to work on a three- fold approach- Research, Training & Outreach. The Centre serve as a hub for critical inquiry, interdisciplinary research, and community engagement. Its mission is to bring about gender justice by  fostering gender equity through knowledge creation, sensitisation, and empowerment, while integrating local cultural contexts and global perspectives.

To emerge as a leading centre of excellence in Gender Studies that fosters equity, inclusivity, and social justice by integrating interdisciplinary research, transformative education, and community engagement, thereby shaping a society that values and upholds gender equality in all spheres of life, aligning with the vision of the Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram.

Mission

Advance Knowledge: Undertake rigorous interdisciplinary research on gender issues, generating evidence that informs academic discourse and policy formulation at state and national levels.

Educate & Train: Design and deliver innovative curricula, certificate courses, and training programmes that embed gender perspectives across disciplines and empower students, officials, and stakeholders.

Engage Communities: Collaborate with neighbourhoods, schools, NGOs, and workplaces to promote gender sensitisation, conduct gender audits, and advocate for equity and inclusivity in developmental actions.

Influence Policy: Serve as a credible knowledge hub that bridges academia and governance, contributing to progressive policies and practices that advance gender justice in Kerala and beyond.

Sustain Impact: Build networks, partnerships, and resource repositories that ensure the Centre’s long-term relevance, accessibility, and leadership in the field of Gender Studies.

Working Projects under Gender Studies Centre
  1. Exploring Gender Parity Among Relationships; An Overview Among Adolescents in Kerala (Pilot study)
  2. Gender Dynamics and Well-Being Among Coastal Women in Kerala (Pilot study)
  3. Gendered Disparities in Public Sanitation in Kerala: Women’s Access, Safety and Dignity in Public and Community Toilets (Pilot study)

Objectives

  1. To promote interdisciplinary research on gender issues.
  2. To develop training modules for students, faculty, and community stakeholders on gender sensitisation, equity, gender justice and inclusion.
  3. To undertake outreach programmes to engage schools, NGOs, and local communities in dialogue and action.
  4. To create a repository of resources, publications, and case studies relevant to gender studies in India, with emphasis on regional contexts.
  5. To provide internship opportunities for UG/PG/PhD students in areas related to gender studies.
  6. To provide policy support to NGO’s, Government  and autonomous agencies in the areas of gender equality and justice.

Governing Body

  • Hon Director: A senior faculty member with expertise in gender studies.
  • Advisory Committee: Principal is the chairperson of the Centre, an external expert in the field of gender issues and faculty members representing diverse disciplines and co-ordinators of various committees related to gender equality and justice.
