HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:
The Department of Biochemistry & Microbiology is one of the youngest Departments in the Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram. It came into existence in the year 1999 under the Department of Chemistry, with Smt. Raziya Y. as the first Head of the Department. The Department offers a UG Programme – B.Sc. Biochemistry and Industrial Microbiology, which is an interdisciplinary programme with Biochemistry as core course, Industrial Microbiology as the vocational course and Chemistry as the complementary course. The programme comes under the Career Related Choice Based Credit & Semester System (2a) of the University of Kerala. The Bachelor’s degree is awarded by the University of Kerala.
ABOUT THE COURSE
The programme provides major opportunities for in-depth studies in the modern aspects of Biology such as Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Pathology, Environmental studies, Genetics etc. ICT enabled teaching facilities are available.
The Biochemistry and Microbiology laboratories are fully equipped with state of the art facilities. The Department has young, skilled and well qualified faculty members who are actively involved in the classroom as well as laboratory teaching and other extracurricular activities for the students. The Departmental library facility is also available. The students have free access to a rich stock of books in Biochemistry, Microbiology and allied subjects.
The students completing this programme can choose Biochemistry, Microbiology or other Interdisciplinary subjects for their future studies and most of our alumni are well placed in reputed Institutions, laboratories and Research firms.

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT:
Welcome to the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram. We offer a basic science-based curriculum and the primary focus is to impart different methods to achieve academic excellence. Through the class room based teaching and well-equipped laboratories, the students are getting fundamental knowledge in the diverse areas of Life Sciences which are relevant to the medical field and the existence of mankind. We have started our journey in the year 1999 and the students get opportunities to participate in scientific deliberations, presentations, industrial visits and field trips which in turn inculcate a sort of professional training capable of exploring the new horizons in the challenging world of academics. The course contents are periodically updated and the students are encouraged to undertake projects as part of their curriculum. Each student is focused through a tutor and the faculty members are encouraged to participate in faculty development programmes conducted by the UGC and other educational agencies at various time points. COURSES OFFERED:
The Department of Biochemistry & Microbiology offers an undergraduate course in BSc Biochemistry and Microbiology. The full-time course offered by this Department is recognized by the University of Kerala.
BSc Biochemistry and Microbiology programme comes under Career Related Choice Based Credit & Semester System (2a) and consists of six semesters. Students need to study Biochemistry as the core course, Industrial Microbiology as the vocational course and Chemistry as the complementary course.
Key Components of the Curriculum:
Basics of Biochemistry & Microbiology, Biomolecules, Environmental Science, Microbial Taxonomy, Methods in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, Physiological Aspects of Biochemistry, Food Microbiology, Environmental Microbiology, Medical Microbiology, Immunology, Metabolism, Molecular Biology and Clinical Biochemistry. The curriculum also includes laboratory experiments and the subsequent practical examinations in different semesters.
