Department of Physical Education
Empowering Women Through Sports, Leadership, and Excellence
The Department of Physical Education, Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, is a vibrant centre for sports, fitness, wellness, and leadership development. Committed to the holistic growth of women students, the department provides an enabling environment where physical activity, competitive sports, and health education become integral components of the educational experience.
The department offers students opportunities to participate in more than 30 sporting disciplines at the Kerala University Intercollegiate Championships, making it one of the most active and successful sports departments in the university system. Supported by ample sports infrastructure and training facilities, students receive systematic coaching and competitive exposure that enable them to perform at the highest levels.
The college has consistently established itself as a sporting powerhouse within the University of Kerala. During the past three years, college teams have emerged as University Champions in several events, while also securing numerous first runner-up and second runner-up positions across a wide range of sports. This sustained excellence reflects the commitment of the institution, coaches, and student-athletes towards sporting achievement.
Every year, more than 30 students represent the University of Kerala in various inter-university competitions, demonstrating the department’s significant contribution to university sports. Many of our athletes have gone on to achieve distinction at the national and international levels, bringing laurels to the college, the university, and the nation.
Among the distinguished international athletes associated with the college are renowned cricketers Minnu Mani and Asha Shobana; powerlifters Jwala Jose, Nikhitha, Anaka Justin, and Abirami; taekwondo players Margerette Maria Reji and Shivangi Chanambam; and swimmers Priya S P and Varsha. Their accomplishments stand as a source of inspiration for future generations of students.
Beyond competitive sports, the department actively promotes physical literacy, health awareness, and lifelong fitness. In alignment with the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP), the Department of Physical Education offers Skill Enhancement Courses (SEC) and Value-Added Courses (VAC) across different semesters. These courses equip students with practical skills, knowledge of health and wellness, leadership qualities, and an appreciation for active living, thereby contributing to their overall personality development and employability.
As a premier women’s institution, the department views sport as a powerful instrument of empowerment. Through participation in sports and physical activity, students develop confidence, resilience, discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills that prepare them to excel in all spheres of life. The department remains committed to creating opportunities that enable women to achieve excellence, break barriers, and emerge as leaders both within and beyond the sporting arena.
