Department of Statistics
The Department of Statistics at Government Women’s College, Thiruvananthapuram began functioning in 1952, as part of the Mathematics Department. It started functioning as a separate department in 1992. Since 2013, it has been offering an undergraduate programme in Statistics. In addition, the department offers courses to various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of the College

Apart from the Major stream, the Dept also offers courses at Minor, MDC, VAC and SEC levels.

As a field of knowledge, Statistics is concerned with the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation, and presentation of data. It is applicable to a wide range of academic disciplines, from the physical sciences and social sciences to the humanities. As an applied science, Statistics serves scientific research and functions as a tool in many other scientific investigations. The demand for statisticians continues to remain strong in industry, government, and education sectors.
Since the introduction of the undergraduate program, our students have consistently enhanced the college’s reputation by securing first ranks at the university level. The department has also achieved excellent results in extracurricular activities. By providing statistical guidance required for the study and research activities of students in the college, the department also offers strong support to the academic activities of the institution.
Following the vision of the college, the Department of Statistics aims at the holistic development of students. Along with helping students gain in-depth knowledge in the subject, the department is committed to introducing modern techniques that enable them to understand and explore the new career opportunities the field offers in the modern era. As part of this effort, various national and international workshops, seminars, discussions, and lectures are organized every year. Innovative courses incorporating modern software programs for comprehensive data analysis are offered at the undergraduate level. Through these initiatives, the department aims to develop students’ data analysis skills and equip them to achieve leading positions in employment opportunities in the industry.
